Variety : Basil Holy Green

Ocimum tenuiflorum (also Ocimum sanctum), commonly known as holy basil, or Tulsi, is an aromatic perennial plant native to the Indian subcontinent that is cultivated widely throughout Southeast Asia for religious and traditional medicine purposes, such as in herbal teas in Ayurveda. The leaves also are used in the worship of Vishnu, while the plant is viewed as protective for the home. With such grandiose uses, it may seem outrageous to use it in cooking. Nonetheless Tulsi is well-known in Southeast Asia cuisine, and during the hot summer months, you should be able to find big bunches of it at farmers' markets with ethnic stalls.

Shiso, also known as ‘Japanese Basil’, raises a question with all who taste it: is it a basil or a mint? Neither one nor the other, Shiso has a unique taste that is hard to describe. Some say it’s ‘citrusy’, while others call it ‘herbaceous’ – and others still call it ‘sweet’! What is undisputable is that it can be used to give flavour and colour to many different Japanese dishes, from umeboshi to sushi and sashimi.

Variety : Basil Bolloso Napoletano:

When you think of Italy, you think of a giant, bright green basil leaf on a pizza or on a spaghetti dish. Well, that basil is most likely Bolloso Napoletano, a popular heirloom variety originating from the area of Naples; it is well appreciated for the intense fragrance of its large, blistered leaves. In ancient times, basil was considered a magical plant and sacred to Venus, goddess of love. Perhaps for this reason, in Boccaccio’s Decameron, we find one of the strangest love stories featuring the basil plant. We do not want to give spoilers here, so take a trip to southern Italy and ask about Elisabetta da Messina and her beloved Lorenzo. You may be pointed to the nearest potted bush of fragrant basil.

Variety : Chives Fine Leaves:

This popular and commonly used cooking herb requires little presentation. Chives are grown for their tubular, tender leaves, whose distinctive, delicate onion-like flavour makes chives an iconic garnishing ingredient in various meals, including French omelette and Swedish herring. As an essential component of the French fine herbs blend, it cannot be overlooked by chefs and foodies. Chive is also a popular ornamental garden plant because of its gorgeous pink-lilac blossoms (which are also edible). The fine-leaved variety, which is thinner and smaller than regular chives, is an ideal variety for a kitchen window sill planting or patio container garden.

Variety : Thüringer Coriander:

Did you know that cilantro and coriander are one and the same plant? Well, sort of. Cilantro refers to the leaves of the plant, whereas coriander refers to the plant’s tiny, round seeds. Like the names, the tastes are also different: dried coriander seeds are used roasted and ground to give a strong flavour to pickles and seasoning, whereas fresh coriander leaves are delicate and lacy, imparting a unique aroma – which some people love, some people hate. Cilantro’s history can be traced back to the Middle East; then, the Romans brought it to Europe, where it was considered a fairly exotic spice. Thüringer is an old, German traditional variety with good seed production.
